Smash Party

My friend Greg and I recently braved an ominous sounding event named Smash Party. It’s a once a year thing in Los Angeles, put on by an animation studio called Titmouse. If you’re not familiar with them, they’re the guys behind Metalocalypse. It’s without a doubt the oddest (and probably most cathartic) company party you’ll ever go to. The first […]

First Midnight City Art

Supremely talented illustrator/animator Evan Cagle will be creating three original pieces of art based on Midnight City, the first of which is included here. It can also be seen at the top of the main page. Evan’s piece shows one of the final moments of the first book, and gives a first glimpse at a pivotal location in the Conquered […]

Carnival, Los Angeles, April, 2012

Recently, a traveling carnival set up shop in a park near where I live in Los Angeles. I always loved these things, even though most of them are run down and rusty (and probably not the safest way to spend your time). The idea of traveling from place to place is romantic in a way, though the reality, I have […]

So, a Writer walks into a coffee shop…

I’m writing this in a small, hip, yet not over the top diner near my apartment. It’s one of my favorite places. I can walk here when the weather’s nice (which it usually is). I know the servers and the managers. My poor math skills result in them getting tipped well, and they give me a free dessert or a […]

Crafting a Narrative: Plotting vs. Streaming

“I distrust plot for two reasons: first, because our lives are largely plotless, even when you add in all our reasonable precautions and careful planning; and second, because I believe plotting and the spontaneity of real creation aren’t compatible. It’s best that I be as clear about this as I can – I want you to understand that my […]

Suspension of Disbelief in Classic Speculative Fiction

“I am forced into speech because men of science have refused to follow my advice without knowing why. It is altogether against my will that I tell my reasons for opposing this contemplated invasion of the antarctic – with its vast fossil hunt and its wholesale boring and melting of the ancient ice caps. And I am the more […]

The release date for Midnight City has been pushed from September to October 30, 2012. If you pre-ordered the book from Amazon, you should receive a notice informing you of the change. If only it were a horror book, that would be the perfect release date. But aliens are scary, right? Pre-order here!

Midnight City Audio Book Coming

Blackstone Audio will be producing the audio book versions of the Conquered Earth series. Blackstone, for those who don’t know, is the largest independent audio book company in America. They’re still owned by their original founders, and they’re very passionate about what they do. It’s really exciting to be involved with them.

My New Book Midnight City Comes out October 30, 2012

Earth has been conquered. An alien race known as the Assembly has abducted the adult population, leaving its young to fend for themselves. Here, three young people begin a precarious journey through a dangerous, post-apocalyptic landscape. Holt and Mira, a bounty hunter and his captive, naturally at odds yet struggling to fight off a mutual attraction, and Zoey, a little […]
